Identify the water system
Public facilities may collect, treat, and recirculate water. A typical backyard mat attaches to a hose without a treatment system. Follow instructions for the setup you actually have. CDC says recreational water can spread illness and chlorine does not kill every germ instantly. Its public guidance is not a backyard-toy cleaning manual, but it supports useful behavior rules.
- Keep anyone with diarrhea out of water play.
- Discourage swallowing the water.
- Use regular bathroom and diaper-check breaks.
- Do not let children sit directly on spray jets.
Before and after backyard play
Inspect the mat, connectors, drains, and accessories. If there is trapped water, slime, strong odor, or damage you cannot clean as directed, pause use rather than improvising chemicals. After play, drain, clean as directed, and dry both faces. Drying is an ownership step—not proof that germs were eliminated.
- Read the current cleaning instructions.
- Remove debris before connecting the hose.
- Keep drinking cups out of the play zone.
- Use only cleaning methods the manufacturer permits.
