Map the whole wet zone
Measure more than the listed diameter. Include the hose path, overspray, entry route, and clearance from hard edges. A 68-inch listing describes a product dimension—not necessarily a 68-inch play zone. Choose a place where supervision is practical and drainage will not create a problem at steps, walkways, doors, or neighboring property.
- Mark the perimeter and a movement buffer.
- Route the hose away from the main running path.
- Check where water travels during draining.
- Move play away from pavement, sharp edging, grills, and electrical equipment.
Inspect the surface and lawn
Remove stones, sticks, thorns, toys, and hard clumps. Use the manufacturer’s surface requirements; an improvised underlay may change drainage, stability, wear, or warranty coverage. Extension guidance establishes that wet soil is especially susceptible to compaction, although it does not specifically test splash pads. Our limited inference is to rotate the setup area and stop if ground becomes muddy or rutted.
